Mountain bike on the island of ElbaItinerary: Rio Elba - Cavo - Rio Elba

Difficulty: easy.
This second excursion leads only over asphalted roads and is therefore easy and can be done also by those who have small experience with dirt trails.
The departure is in Rio Elba, a gracious little mountain town, with a nice mineral museum and where the road for Cavo starts.
After 1 km on the left side, at around 200 meters from the street, you find the Santa Catarina monastary, today a world famous cultural center with a splendid botanical garden, as well as the ruins of the old etruscan town of Grassera.
Back on the street, after 1 km, on the right side you will see the Giove fortress on a hill. A tower that was build in 1459 by the Appians, today completely in ruins. You can reach the tower in minutes walking.
Continuing you will pass the old iron mines, today abbandoned. Somewhat further you get near to the Monte Grosso mountain: From its top you have a breathtaking view from the Portoferraio Gulf until the the other end of the island : Capo Vita.
The road continues to Cavo where you can have a nice walk along the seaside before turning back.
